The Art of Self Care: Beyond the Basics for Mature Women

The art of self-care begins with stopping the ageist thoughts that creep into our minds throughout the day. It's easy to blame everything on our age, especially when viral posts about aging at 44 and 60 make us believe that life is on a downhill slide. But why waste precious moments with negative thoughts about ourselves? Life moves fast, and each day is an opportunity to celebrate who we are.

We often catch ourselves thinking, "My legs aren't toned," "My stomach sticks out," or "I don't want to show my [insert body part]." These thoughts create an internal battle. Let’s start today to redefine self-care. When a negative thought arises, combat it with a positive one. Play a great song, journal your feelings, call a friend, and refuse to let negativity take root in your mental health.

We know better, yet we've been programmed not to speak ill of others while somehow accepting self-criticism. How did that become okay? Instead of making fun of ourselves, let’s find humor in everyday life and stop the negative self-talk. Here are my top five tips to master the art of self-care:

  1. Create Daily Affirmations: Write down positive affirmations and say them every day. Remind yourself of your worth and beauty.
  2. Get Ready for the Day: Dress up and prepare for the endless possibilities each beautiful day brings. When you look good, you feel good.
  3. Be Gentle and Forgiving: Treat yourself with kindness. Forgive yourself for mistakes and celebrate your achievements.
  4. Reach Out: Let someone know you’re thinking of them. Building and maintaining connections enriches your life and theirs.
  5. Do Something for You: Every day, do something that brings you joy—a walk, a journal entry, a compliment to yourself, a favorite song, a good book, or simply enjoying a beautiful view.

Additionally, consider incorporating these self-care practices:

  • Meditation and Prayer:: Take a few minutes each day to practice prayer or meditation. This can help center your thoughts and reduce stress. I have miracle moments programmed in my calendar to take a few minutes each day and say some prayers for those who I am thinking of and to express gratitude.
  • Creative Expression: Engage in activities like painting, knitting, or writing. Creative outlets are wonderful for mental and emotional well-being. My family has been having fun painting rocks at different times and all ages love it.  Start a rock garden today.
  • Community Involvement: Join a local club or volunteer group. Being part of a community fosters a sense of belonging and purpose.

At our boutique, we chose the name "c You" with a heartfelt purpose. It's a reminder that we see you, appreciate you, and celebrate you in all seasons of life. We want you to know that your presence and uniqueness are valued. Whether you're dressing up for a special occasion or simply for yourself, we delight in seeing you shine. Let "c You" be a source of inspiration and affirmation that you are seen and cherished, just as you are.

These self-care activities enrich your life with joy and purpose, making the moments you share with your children even more meaningful, free from any pressure for them to ensure your happiness. Embrace each day with confidence and positivity, knowing that you are more than enough just as you are.
